tryout structure and info

In order to facilitate productive and efficient tryouts, we will be limiting each session to 1.5 - 2 hours in length with a maximum of 50 kids per group. Each tryout session will work in the following way:

  1. Warm-up (Please arrive 10 to 15 minutes earlier than the start of your tryout to make sure you are changed and ready to start at the proper time).

  2. Skills evaluation

    • The athletes will be divided into three to five groups, depending on the number of kids at the tryout.

    • There will be a different station for each group, evaluating a specific skill set.

    • This portion of the tryout will give all of the athletes equal and ample opportunity to show their skills in specific game scenarios.

  3. Games

    • The players will now be divided into teams.

    • During this part of the tryout, the coaches will evaluate how athletes use their skill set in a game situation as well as evaluate other skills such as hustle, basketball IQ, and teamwork.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR:

Raw talent, athleticism, and size are great to have but are not the only pieces to a great player. At Eurostep, there are other factors that are just as important as a player’s physical ability. During tryouts, we look for the following traits:

  • Focus and listening skills - If a player doesn’t want to listen, they cannot get better. PRO TIP - If you want to impress the coaches at tryouts, listen closely to the instructions of each drill and know what is asked of you. This is a great way to demonstrate listening skills.

  • Unselfishness and positivity - Basketball is a team game and athletes need to demonstrate that they can fit into a team and work together. It is much easier to coach players who are willing to work with others and encourage them.

  • Work ethic and grit - From our experience, players who are willing to work hard and put in the time to get better always end up getting better. PRO TIP - The tryout is only two hours long, give it your absolute best and that is all you can ask of yourself.

THINGS TO NOTE:

  • If there are more than 40 athletes registered for a specific age group, we will have more than one tryout slot for that age group to ensure we give every athlete an equal opportunity to showcase their talents.

  • If we do not have at least 12 athletes registered for a specific age group, we will cancel that tryout. Refunds will be sent out to parents who have paid for the tryout.

  • There will be at least two coaches on hand for each of the tryouts to ensure that every athlete gets multiple sets of eyes on them, making the evaluations more accurate and precise. We keep a max ratio of 1:8 coaches to players to ensure that we can evaluate as accurately as possible.

  • There will be cuts after the first round of tryouts. Our goal is to have between 18 - 25 kids for the second round.
