DEVELOPMENTAL CONCEPT

Young athletes need to develop a love for the game first before they start training seriously and improving their skill set. For this program, the coaching staff has to answer one question first “is this drill going to be fun for the kids”? If the answer is no, then we will not incorporate it into the training session. While we put having fun first, the program is specifically designed to help the players start developing the fundamental skills and movements of basketball.

OBJECTIVES

There are four main objectives for the program, and none of them include the word winning. At Eurostep, we believe that winning is a by-product of practice and preparation and therefore will occur if the below objectives are met.

  1. Developing kinetic intelligence - At the most fundamental level, the athlete needs to have a good base of motor skills and coordination in order to be able to learn new skills and movements. Without developing these skills, as they get older, it will take them longer to learn new skills.

  2. Learning basketball-specific skills - Learning how to perform the fundamental basketball skills.

  3. Understanding basic concepts - The goal is to help the young athletes understand the core ideas of basketball and working within a team.

  4. Basketball rules - As the players develop some skills, we will start teaching them the rules of the game.

SESSION DETAILS

Each workout will have an individual skills portion and then some teamwork-type of drills. The goal is to first give kids the tools they need in order to be able to execute the teamwork drills. The sessions are timed to be earlier in the evenings to make sure that the athletes can get to bed on time and make sure that they are not over tired while at training or afterward.
